Black Swan Coffee House for Change
A beloved Stratford tradition is returning!
As part of Shelterlink Youth Services’ 35th anniversary celebrations, we’re bringing back the spirit of the Black Swan Coffee House Revival with the Black Swan Coffee House for Change on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 7:00–10:00 p.m. at Avondale United Church.
For years, the Black Swan Coffee House brought Stratford’s music lovers and community together in support of Shelterlink. After a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re excited to revive this special tradition and celebrate 35 years of community, connection, and support for young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
The evening will feature live music from friends of Perth County Conspiracy (Does Not Exist) and Barry James Payne and String Bone, along with plenty of opportunities to reconnect, celebrate, and support a cause that matters to our community.
Since 1991, Shelterlink has been there for young people across Perth County — providing shelter, prevention, outreach, housing support, advocacy, and connections to community resources. Today, we’re working toward a future where youth homelessness is brief, rare, and non-recurring.
The Black Swan Coffee House for Change is more than a celebration of our past. It’s an opportunity to help shape the next 35 years.
Come enjoy an evening of incredible local music, celebrate Shelterlink’s history, and help create a brighter future for young people in Perth County.
Background
In 1961, the Black Swan Coffee House was established in Stratford as a seasonal operation by Harry Finlay. Originally located on Ontario Street, the Coffee House moved to Market Place and became a year-round establishment. It was the place to be for folk music, poetry, and dramatic readings during the 60s and 70s.
The Coffee House featured Canadian Legends, including: Perth County Conspiracy (does not exist), featuring Cedric Smith, Terry Jones, and David Woodhead; Brent Titcomb; John Jackson; Valdy; and Joe Hall. Performances usually began after the evening performances at the Stratford Festival and often lasted until 4 in the morning.
The Revival was started in 1990 as an annual celebration of the Coffee House, pay homage to the Perth County Conspiracy, and as a fundraiser for Shelterlink (then known as S.A.I.L.L.).
Each year, local businesses donate silent auction items, desserts, tea and, of course, coffee.
